Joel brings together a combination of deep technical expertise and practical aviation experience. His journey began in Switzerland, where his Computer Science PhD at the University of Fribourg focused on proving that safety-critical systems work correctly. This foundation led him to Systerel, building verification tools for the kind of railway and aviation systems where failure isn't an option, then to Diffblue in Oxford, where he led teams pioneering AI code generation.
As a licensed pilot, Joel understands aviation challenges firsthand. More time than he can recount, he found himself in a situation
where the lack of timely situational information made the flight more challenging than it needed to be. His MBA from Warwick Business School reinforced his belief that the best technology solves real problems for real people.
Joel founded AYRYX in Los Angeles, putting together a team of aerospace experts to tackle aviation's mounting pressures: increasingly congested airspace and tight operational margins that put unprecedented stress on pilots and controllers. From his unique vantage point combining technical expertise with operational flying experience, Joel can see both the scale of the problem and the path to practical solutions. AYRYX is developing AI-powered aviation systems that transform how airspace is managed, making flying simpler and more efficient.
